One sentence in the announcement sold me. The new Emptiness album opens with a riff picked up mid-bar, exactly where their 2014 record Nothing But The Whole stopped in abrupt, unexplained silence. Twelve years later, they walk back into the room and finish the phrase.
Emptiness is a Belgian experimental metal band from Brussels, founded in 1998 by bassist and vocalist Jérémie Bézier and guitarist Olivier J.L.W., both known from black metal band Enthroned. Across seven albums the band has moved from black and death metal into avant-garde, gothic-tinged territory that no longer fits any bin at the record shop. Nowhere Speaks, the seventh, came out on 17 July 2026 through Season of Mist. Ten tracks. Recorded almost entirely live in the studio, after four years of preparation.
Live, and you hear it. The album breathes the way a room breathes. Guitars that sound like they are coming through a wall. Synths from Dea Hydra that hang in the air like cold cigarette smoke. Bézier’s voice more spoken threat than scream. The band’s own description says the album “descends into a dimension removed from all human trace” and for once the press text undersells it. The first track is literally called Nothing but the Whole (Part 2). The last one loops back into the opening riff of the 2014 album. The two records seal into a circle. Who does that? Nobody does that.
Why nobody knows them
Wrong bin, every time. Too weird for the black metal purists who loved the Enthroned pedigree. Too metal for the goth and post-punk crowd their later records flirt with. And Brussels has never had the scene-machine that Gent or Kortrijk built around Belgian heaviness. Emptiness has spent 28 years being nobody’s band. That is precisely the appeal.
Why now
Because Nowhere Speaks is the entry point the catalogue never had. The concept gives you a reason to go back to Nothing But The Whole, and the live recording gives newcomers the least processed version of what this band actually is. If avant-garde black metal means anything as a term, this is its Belgian chapter.
Put on Words to Wind. Eight minutes twenty-four. Somewhere around the middle you will forget what band you are listening to. That is the point.
