We told the origin story earlier today: Death SS formed in Pesaro in 1977, fusing horror, occultism and metal before Venom, before Mercyful Fate, before the British wave had a name. This is what that band sounds like now, forty-nine years in.
Love Until Death is a dark ballad from The Entity, the concept album Steve Sylvester released in May 2025, and the subject is pure Death SS: the impossible, tormented love between Dr. Jekyll and his young housekeeper Mary Reilly, drawn from Valerie Martin’s 1990 novel. Not a horror cliché. A literary deep cut about the person who has to love a monster. Sylvester has been mining that seam since before most of his audience was born.
The production credit closes a beautiful circle. The Entity was produced by Sylvester with Tom Dalgety, the Grammy-winning producer behind Ghost’s Impera. Tobias Forge has named Death SS a favourite. So the band that drew the map for theatrical occult metal now records with the producer of its most successful student. The influence flowed one way for forty years. The craft finally flowed back.
No reinvention here either, and none needed. Face paint, drama, riffs, a story. Some bands maintain a formula. Death SS maintains a haunted house, and the lights have never gone out.
