Inbox — Week 42, 2026

Four this week, and one circle closed: Iapetus' The Mother Void, announced in these pages back in August, is out. Around it: Insomnium return with Netherworlds, The Gathering revisit their Mandylion era live, and Threshold remix a 25-year-old prog landmark.

Four in the Inbox this week, and the sixteenth of October did the heavy lifting. Three of these dropped on the same Friday.

Insomnium — Netherworlds

Finland · Melodic Death Metal · Century Media

Out 16 October. Insomnium has sat in my idea pile for months with one line attached: if you have ever walked through Helsinki in November, you understand this band. Finnish melancholy as a craft, carried by a group that has not made a weak record in two decades. New material from them is not news, it is weather. The good kind, the grey kind.

Iapetus — The Mother Void

United States · Progressive Death Metal · Willowtip

Circle closed: we flagged this one in Inbox week 33 when it was just an announcement with an Eluveitie guest credit, and now it is here. Out 16 October: seven tracks, sixty-nine minutes, which tells you exactly what kind of band this is. Long-form American progressive death metal with patience as a feature, not a flaw.

The Gathering — Echoes of Mandylion

Netherlands · Atmospheric Rock · Self-released

Out 12 October from the Nijmegen veterans. The title points straight at their 1995 landmark, and the supporters confirm what it is: a live document. “To those that witnessed this concert you are all truly blessed. You could not ask for a better set list,” writes supporter Shayne Dey, who credits the Mandylion lineup. For anyone who was there when Dutch atmospheric metal grew up, this needs no further sales pitch.

Threshold — Hypothetical (2026 Remix)

United Kingdom · Progressive Metal · Nuclear Blast

Out 16 October: the UK prog institution revisits their 2001 album with a full remix, a quarter century on. Remixes of classic records are usually either revelation or vandalism. Threshold has the engineering pedigree to land on the right side, and Hypothetical deserves ears that never heard it the first time.

Also on the radar: Sentient Ruin drops a new Last Agony record on 23 October, raw crust for the Doom and Extreme Noise Terror crowd. And not a release but worth your reading time: Justin Broadrick posted a long interview about the GODFLESH beat philosophy via his Bandcamp feed. “Less is more - it’s all about reduction, repetition and distillation.” The man invented a genre with that sentence.
