The Strange Case of Draugveil

Black metal, Reddit drama, and a band nobody can agree on. The internet did its thing again. Here's why none of it matters.

The internet found another black metal band to argue about. Draugveil. A one-person atmospheric/depressive black metal project that “came out of nowhere.” Reddit lost its mind. Accusations flew. Someone on r/ToddintheShadow started asking questions. The Gatekeeper Brigade showed up in full force.

Here’s the thing. The musician behind Draugveil has been active since 2018. Multiple bands. DIY releases. The usual path. Someone didn’t do their homework before hitting “post” and suddenly it’s a conspiracy.

Black metal and the authenticity problem

This genre eats drama for breakfast. Always has. Norwegian church burnings in the ’90s. Bands accusing other bands of not being “real” because they smiled in a photo. Entire forums dedicated to proving that someone’s corpse paint technique is historically inaccurate. Black metal has a gatekeeping problem the size of Scandinavia.

Draugveil’s “mystery” isn’t about deception. It’s about metalheads doing what they do best. Obsessing over credentials instead of listening to the music. Someone releases atmospheric black metal that sounds like staring out a window during a November rainstorm, and the first question isn’t “does this hit?” but “how long has this person been making music?”

Wrong question.

Who cares when they started?

Metal Archives says 2018. Active in various projects. DIY black metal. The kind of person who records in a bedroom and puts it on Bandcamp because the music needs to exist. That’s not suspicious. That’s how half the black metal you love got made.

The sound is atmospheric, depressive, raw in the right places. If that’s your thing, it works. If it’s not, move on. There are ten thousand other bands waiting for your attention.

The pattern

This happens every few months. Band appears. Reddit notices. Someone says “fake.” Someone else says “gatekeeping.” Both sides yell at each other for a week. Nobody actually sits down and listens to the album front to back. The band either disappears or outlasts the drama. The internet moves on to the next target.

Draugveil will either make more music or won’t. The Reddit thread will be forgotten by next month. The only thing that lasts is the riff. It always comes back to the riff.

If the music is good, play it. If it’s not, close the tab. Everything else is noise.
