The French do not do things small. Hellfest is proof. Six stages. Over 200 bands. A production budget that would make most concert promoters weep into their spreadsheets. And somehow, in a small town near Nantes surrounded by vineyards, it all works.
Clisson is not where you would expect Europe’s most diverse extreme metal festival. It is wine country. Quiet stone houses. A river running through the centre. Then once a year, 60,000 people show up and the ground shakes for four days straight. The locals have made their peace with it. Some of them sell crepes to metalheads from the side of the road. France.
Why Hellfest Is Different
Scale. Other festivals are big. Hellfest is a city. The site has permanent infrastructure now. Massive metal sculptures tower over the walkways. A cathedral-shaped stage for the extreme acts. The Valley stage for doom and stoner. The Warzone for punk and hardcore. Every subgenre has a home here, and the programming team treats each one with equal respect. You can go from watching Cannibal Corpse to catching a blues-rock act to stumbling into a French black metal set, all in the same afternoon. The smell of merguez sausages drifts across the site constantly. Your clothes will smell like charcoal and sunscreen for a week after.
The 2026 Edition
167 bands. Let that sink in. The lineup reads like a who’s who of heavy music across three decades. At 300 euros for a four-day pass, the price-per-band ratio is genuinely absurd. You physically cannot see everything. Accepting that fact is step one. Making peace with it takes about three beers.
I think Hellfest has overtaken Wacken as the best all-round metal festival in Europe. Controversial opinion in some circles but the programming depth is just untouchable right now.
The Feel
Hellfest hits different in summer. The French sun is brutal. Shade is precious. The dust kicks up under thousands of boots until the air itself turns golden in the late afternoon light. The food is surprisingly good because this is France and they refuse to serve bad food even at a metal festival. Wine at a metal festival. Not ironically. Actually good wine. From the vineyards next door. That is the kind of detail that makes this place special.
Who This Is For
The metalhead who wants everything. Every subgenre. Every era. Every volume level. If you are the kind of person who makes spreadsheets of which bands to see and colour-codes them by stage, Hellfest was built for you.
Getting there takes effort. Fly to Nantes, shuttle to Clisson. But once you are in, you do not leave. There is no reason to. Everything you need is inside those gates. Four days. Six stages. One absolute monster of a festival.
