Blackgaze is the cleanest example of black metal evolving by hybridisation rather than by ideological purity. The genre takes the surface vocabulary of second-wave black metal — tremolo riffs, blast-beats, shrieked vocals — and replaces the aesthetic intent. Instead of cold, abrasive and adversarial, blackgaze is warm, washed-out and melodic. The shoegaze half of the equation supplies the rest.
What defines it
Guitars sit in walls of reverb and delay rather than the trebly dryness of Norwegian black metal. Compositions move in waves between heaviness and quiet rather than in constant attack. Vocals often appear sparingly, sometimes clean, sometimes screamed, sometimes both. Lyrical themes shift from antagonism to introspection, loss, longing, and natural beauty. The mood often resembles post-rock more than it resembles black metal.
France first
Alcest is widely credited with originating the genre. Founder Neige’s earliest releases under the Alcest name in the mid-2000s — and his parallel work with Amesoeurs — established the template. The 2007 EP Le Secret and the 2010 album Écailles de Lune are the most-cited records for the genre’s foundation. The American band Deafheaven took the formula towards a more aggressive, longer-form interpretation with Sunbather in 2013, which was the moment blackgaze crossed into general indie-press coverage. Germany’s Lantlôs, Iceland’s Sólstafir and the Dutch collective An Autumn for Crippled Children all share the lineage.
Why it matters
Blackgaze is one of the rare subgenres where the cross-pollination went both ways. Indie and shoegaze listeners who would never have engaged with black metal discovered it through Alcest and Deafheaven. Black metal listeners who otherwise dismiss anything melodic have made peace with the genre as a legitimate evolution. The fan crossover has had no equivalent in any other extreme metal subgenre.
