Kanonenfieber - Z-Vor! (Official Video)
First World War black metal from Germany. Kanonenfieber turn trenches into blast beats. The monochrome video makes it hit harder.
Kanonenfieber’s “Z-Vor!” drops you straight into the trenches. The video opens in harsh monochrome. No colour. No comfort. Just mud, smoke, and blast beats. The aesthetic choice is deliberate. This band writes about the First World War and they present it without any of the glorification that ruins most war-themed metal.
The riffs are relentless. Tuned low, played fast, driven by drum patterns that sound like artillery fire. The vocals sit somewhere between black metal shrieking and death metal gutturals. A voice giving orders that nobody wants to follow. The production keeps everything slightly raw. Polished enough to hear the individual instruments but dirty enough to feel like you’re listening through barbed wire.
Kanonenfieber have carved out a specific niche. Historical black metal rooted in the horror of mechanised warfare. “Z-Vor!” is a command. “Forward!” shouted at soldiers who know what’s waiting for them. The lyrics don’t romanticise. They document. The futility of conflict runs through every verse without ever becoming preachy about it.
The video switches between band performance and battlefield footage. Staged but effective. There’s a weight to the whole thing that goes beyond standard metal posturing. This is a band that reads history books and turns them into albums.
If you know Kanonenfieber already, this is more of what makes them essential. If you don’t, start here. Put it loud. Think about what the title means. Then listen again.
