Saturnus or how to create a depression

Saturnus is a six-piece metal band from Denmark formed in 1991. Saturnus's music is classified as melodic death/doom metal, with touches of gothic metal. Their lyrics are themed towards sorrow, loss, and death.

The best album is "Veronica decides to die". Veronika Decides to Die (Portuguese: Veronika decide morrer) is a novel by Paulo Coelho. It tells the story of 24 year old Veronika, who appears to have everything in life going for her, but who decides to kill herself.

To get a feel for the Saturnus' sound, all you have to do is give a listen to their ten-minute album opener "I Long", since it encapsulates everything the band wants to achieve musically. Like most other songs on this disc, it starts with slow piano notes, so gentle and sweet, before heavy drums kick in pounding and guitars create thich threads of atmosphere. Thomas A.G. Jensen's vocals project maturity and sense of calmness. He delivers the lyrics in a semi-sung monotone, yet his voice is very clean and smooth. Then, he shifts to unique growls, quite different from the sound you hear on Opeth or Morbid Angel albums. His growls evoke the stuff on Anathema's The Silent Enigma to me; they sound tortured and rough, but every word is discernible. Halfway through the piece, string effects float above the piece over a solo piano with only spoken narration. There is even a drone passage at the end, not unlike the stuff on the new Cult of Luna album, but it's kept to a minimum in order to maintain the song's unity. It finishes just as it had started, with a soft piano coda. This is even better than "my dying bride" because of the variations in the music and better technical breaks. Ther is also a lot of soloing present which adds to the emotional value of this album.

"Pretend" and "Decending" serve to fully establish the sound of this disc. "Pretend" is actually heavier, considering its brutal guitar riffs, but the The Silent Enigma influence is even more apparent on this track. It does carve its niche though; there are tranquil passages filled with eerie keyboard effects and superb clean guitars covering them. More spoken vocals follow, only to be replaced by an ever-present blues solo that simply takes the lead and lets guitarists Tais Pedersen and Peter Erecius Poulse shine. There is a good deal of bluesy guitar work throughout the album, which is one of the things what makes this band different. So brutal and doomy at one time, and so bluesy and rockish at another, "Rain Wash Me" and and "All Alone" both boast a good deal of lucid synth lines, blending them effectively with sparse piano and gentle acoustic guitars. While there is some growling on the former, "All Alone" is fully clean-sung. It even has a cool folky melody happening under ethereal guitar riffs. The album ends on a more melodic yet also aggressive note: "Murky Waters", lots of melodic guitars strung across.

Maylene and the sons of disaster

Maylene & the sons of disaster. I stumbled upon a couple of weeks ago. I have to admit. Not standard metal with heavy riffs and double bass drums. Bit how it rocks !

What we find here is a mixture between hardcore and hardrock which is very unique. Dallas Taylor is the most notable member of Maylene and the Sons of Disaster. He was the original vocalist for the metalcore band, Underoath, but was "asked to leave" the band in late 2003.

What's up with christian music suddenly? I had never heard of a christian "dirty south rock" band and this year there are two. Don't worry, if you think christians can't rock, mother Maylene and also the Showdown are here to set you straight. And after they rip your face off and then drag you through the mud you will repent and lift your hands and shout hallelujah. Then you will realize your in the car and put you hands down and hope nobody saw you. If you liked Pantera, Clutch, COC, mixed with a little skynyrd you must get this album.

Like their label-mates 'The Showdown', these guys have turned out a very solid & promising first album. They have a unique sound - it's not easy to compare them to any particular band out there. Most notable songs "Gusty Like the Wind " , "Mind of a Grimes " & "Lady at the Gate".

Cancer Bats

If you listen to this southern style blend between hardcore and rock, you'd probable suspect that this group's origins are in Texas rather than Toronto. The tone and heft of the guitar work owes everything to the Southern metal style.

The Cancer Bats have come to destroy. Fueled by a burning desire to rage harder, play louder and have more fun than any other band, Cancer Bats mix hardcore, southern metal, and punk rock into a lethal rock and roll explosion.

The rhythms that drive Cancer Bats‘ music are pure hardcore punk, with tight fast breakbeats and solid thunder from the bass backing up the simple power of the chords. The two genres have been mixed before with varying degrees of success, but Hail Destroyer hits the balance point that I’ve found the others lack.

Hail Destroyer

This newest album "Hail Destroyer" kicks some serious ass. It also marks a new starting point for this band. They've kinda changed they way they sounded in the past and found a new blend where the voice and guitar are more mature and mix better than before. Their sound on this album, compared to Birthing the Giant, is so superior.

It’s not all party music though. Frontman Liam Cormier has opened up his lyric sheet to delve into deeper, more personal areas than before.

Hail Destroyer is the Cancer Bats sophomore studio release. Co-produced by Eric Ratz (Big Sugar, Theory Of A Dead Man, Billy Talent), Kenny Luong (Billy Talent), and Greg Below (Alexisonfire) and recorded at Vespa Studios.

real southern rock stuff

Based in Richmond, Virginia since 1996 and fueled by a desire to play dirty, kick ass rock and roll; ATP honed their skills and began assaulting the local touring circuit. Alabama Thunderpussy took to the road and watched their fanbase grow as they established cred in every city across America.

ATP released this album in 2007 with Relapse Records. The music cannot be defined as heavy but more as a cross-over between hard rock and more southern style rock. A sort of Lynyrd Skynyrd mees Pantera. The Japanese release also contained a bonus track, a cover of the Whitesna

ke song "Still of the Night"

Over the last ten years they have gone through a lot of member changes, due to various reasons, but never gave up. Now on their third vocalist, ATP continues to push out albums and stand as a veteran in the metal game.

Let me start with the bad ne

ws : the cover of the album is awfull. It reminds me of a lot of hadr rock bands in the seventies where the music was poor and the album covert art great. But let me reassure you inmediately : that is NOT the case here.

It doesn't happen a lot for me to fall for a band. But here it was inevitable. The music is GREAT, de guitars and bass lines exceptional and the voice of Kyle Thomas PERFECT. I listened the album from te beginning to the end and it never annoyed me. I forced in some kind of a mental state that prevented to listen to anything else.

I hear some cancer bats in this but the music of ATP laks the anarchy of this other great band.
