Who said good Black Metal couldn't come out of the US? Originating from Olympia, Washington, WITTR was formed by brothers Nathan and Aaron Weaver in April of 2003. The band's style is influenced by Scandinavian Black Metal, Crust Punk, Folk Music, and Doom Metal. The lyrics never touched the cliche BM lyrics of Satanism, Fascism, or Nihilism, instead all lyrics are about nature. Nathan Weaver played guitar and sang for the band, while Aaron played the drums. In 2004 vocalist/guitarist Nick Paul joined the band, and then the first demo was recorded. It is title "Wolves In The Throne Room." After the demo was recored Nick Paul left the band, but luckily he was replaced by vocalist/guitarist Richard Dahlen. After the band's line-up solidified they recorded the 2005 demo which is simply called "Demo." In 2006 Wolves recorded and released their first full length album titled Diadem Of 12 Stars. The album was labeled as one of the most promising Black Metal album's of the US, and the band quickly received a cult following. While Wolves was compared with other BM bands, often satanic, they stressed that they had nothing in common to their darker contemporaries. Their new fame absolutely paid off! In the fall of 2006 producer-engineer Randall Dunn wished to produe their next album. Dunn had also produced albums for SUNN O))), Earth, Grails. In 2007 the band released yet another album. Titled Two Hunters, it was more "epic" than Diadem, and it proved to be more emotionally satisfying! In 2008, the band had their first live recording; "Live at Roadburn 2008" which featured songs from both albums. In 2009 Wolves released their third studio album titled "Black Cascade." Many people will be amazed by this band, but be forewarned. if you are not used to songs longer than 10 minutes I doubt you will survive this band. Fans of Progressive music will find this easy to chow down on and will simply dive into it. If you like this band, I recommend checking out Agalloch, Woods Of Ypres, Drudkh, Green Carnation, Into The Woods, and Staruha Mha!
